Vacation: Too high a price?
The day after vacation
Do you dread taking a vacation because you are worried about returning? When you get back to the office after vacation….what do you find?
*eight gazillion emails?
*nine million texts?
*reports backed up a mile?
*stacks of information from meetings you missed?
Do you start to regret leaving at all? Are you one of the 25% of people who actually give up vacations every year? Perish the thought!!
In 2013, only 25% of workers took ALL their vacations days.
Crazier still? 15% of them took NONE.
Mastercard is even doing a very clever campaign called “One More Day” suggesting that everyone should take just one more day of vacation.
Studies show our brains need structured time AND unstructured time to work at our potential. This comes as a surprise to no one, really. Who can’t guess that we aren’t at our best when we are exhausted and frazzled?
Organizations like ReBoot, and organization which advocates life/work balance created the annual “National Day of Unplugging”. That is a great idea, but you don’t need to wait for Reboot’s official day. Make one of your own!!
Sadly, some of the blame lies with the worker for thinking that work can not go on without them. Ouch! I know that stings! But, we can learn and do better.
Firstly, try the online program “Unroll Me” to help you unsubscribe and avoid some of the avalanche of emails.
Secondly, help someone else when they are on vacation and get them to cover your back when you are gone. Most of us really can be gone for a few days and not have the world come to an end.
What ever it takes – FIND a way. Your mental health, your physical health and the relationships in your family DESERVE it!

Good one! So true!
But so worth the trouble! You’ll get to the bottom of the work pile in time and the memories from the trip last forever!
This is our first day back to work after our last journey – so much of what you mentioned rings very true to us right now! Always worth the trouble though!
Thankfully, you get settled in and back into the routine pretty quickly, but those memories you made on your adventure last a lifetime!
