Unusual Hotels with Kids
Unique Kid Friendly Hotel Choices
Want a really interesting get away? Forget the the usual hotel and go for something new and different. A kids friendly hotel can be a really fun part of the family vacation. My kids love to check out the room where they’ll be staying.
Sometimes the perfect hotel is very similar to home. The comfort of the familiar can be comforting to many and allow for a good night’s sleep. But, if you are traveling to a new country to explore a new culture, why not choose something unusual? Start the kids thinking outside the box and show them something really unique.
Unusual Hotels with Kids – How about a houseboat?
Any place near the water has a potential opportunity for a kid friendly hotel stay that floats! Choose a house boat in any of these cool watery destinations for your next family vacation. The kids will surely talk about these hotel stays for years to come!

Unusual Hotels with Kids – Hotels made of Ice
The concept of an entire building made of ice is hard to imagine for people from the triple digit heat of the south. I would so love to see this in person! I’m guessing these beds made of ice would be hard and thus really good for your back…right?
Here at the cold hotel in Sweden the temperature in your kids friendly hotel room is -5 degrees. Now is the time to break out those crazy flannel onesies pajamas, right?
Unusual Hotels with Kids – Sleep in a cave
Sleeping in a cave was a very HIGH priority for us on our trip to Turkey. We chose a fantastic hotel in the Cappadocia area and it was the coolest kid friendly hotel ever! We had a great experience. One amazing feature of a cave hotel is the ability to keep the room cool even in very hot temperatures. We visited Turkey over the July 4th holiday and it was HOT. The room was blissfully cool.

Unusual Hotels with Kids – Sleep in a treehouse
Who hasn’t wanted to spend the night in a tree house? I’m afraid of critters but think a tree house experience would be super fun! I bet the critters leave you alone, too.
Treehouse Point near Seattle, Washington has wonderful windows. Imagine watching the birds outside – or squirrels
These tree house rooms have everything a regular hotel room has except at bathroom – those are shared and on the ground. Still the coolest ‘camping’ I’ve ever seen!
Finca Bellavista in Costa Rica.
Unusual Hotels with Kids – Sleep in a real castle
Schlosshotel Lemberg – is a 12th century castle that is now a hotel. Finding your way to the hotel is part of the fun. To get here you have to pass through a park and cross 2 moats. How cool! Your kids will love pretending to be knights and royalty here!
Hotel Schloss Matzen in Reith, Austria (about 30 minutes from Innsbruck)
Unusual Hotels with Kids – Sleep in a monastery or a convent
One of the best reasons to try a monastery or a convent is the location. These spots are usually very old and are located right in the middle of the historic area you are interested in visiting. Italy is a great place to look into kid friendly hotel options of sleeping in religious facilities like a monastery or a convent. Go to Monastery.com for a very long list of options!
Strict time rules are common. There isn’t a 24 hour front desk reception as this is a working religious community and the nuns or monks have their regular work schedule. So be prepared to live by the rules or get locked out at night! There is no bending the rules here.
Jerusalem is another wonderful city to explore using a convent as a home base at night. Check out the Ecce Home Convent is located inside the Old City Walls. From their terraces you can see the Dome of the Rock. Imagine watching the sun rise or set from this vantage point.
