While I’m totally with you that there is so much to learn outside the classroom, I believe there is such thing as good timing when taking your kids on vacation. It’s not like work where you earn vacation time and totally should take what you deserve (hello America, I know compared to Europe, they’re not great at taking it!), kids need to take their schooling seriously, and parents should try to uphold that teaching. No, I don’t think a kid really misses out if he misses two days of school, but on principle he should be there. There’s so much holiday time already in the summer, winter, spring break, long weekends… and if possible, that should be respected in my opinion.

That being said, I’ve totally flirted with the idea of homeschooling my kids while travelling around the world, so I should probably get off my high horse 😛

This goes back to school funding. Schools receive money for every student every day in class. Multiple absences result in less funding for the school – funding is not concerned with make-up work or even education while traveling. If it is a school sponsored event (sports trip or other school trip), then the school still receives the funding.

  3. I don’t agree that you and your kids should suffer because some people decided to misuse the system. I was home schooled for two years because of dad’s work related travel and the foundation that was formed for me in those years cannot be described in words. Also Uncle sam should not be allowed to tell you what to do and what not to do. I traveled a lot when I was younger and there is no education like the experience of travel for your kids.

There are many, many who agree with you!! Education does not take place only in the classroom and for sure…people don’t like Uncle Sam telling them what to do!! Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Ah another unique side of the America system. Never ceases to amaze me. I’m sure that somewhere along the line someone felt that this was a great idea. That someone is a fool. My parents are police officers and without taking time off school we never would have gotten a family holiday. Thankfully in Australia this isn’t an issue.

Seriously?? I had no idea. I can’t even tell you how many times I missed school for family vacations growing up. If my parents – who were in charge of me and my growth when I was a child – had no problem with it, what’s it to the schools or anyone else?? My parents would always make sure I completed all my school work and I was never allowed to fall behind on school work at the expense of our family vacations, so what. is. the. big. deal??? You’re right, this is flabbergasting. I say keep doing what you’re doing, regardless of the “law.”
