Is your family vacation legal?
Is your family vacation illegal?
Yes, in some places taking the kids out of school for a family vacation is illegal. I couldn’t believe it either!
But not here….in the US…home to freedom of speech, religion, and family vacations…..right?
Wrong. This New York Time’s article outlines how some schools call days missed from school for vacation ‘illegal’.
Firstly, whoever ‘they’ are that made such crazy laws did not read my post on how travel improves students’ test scores!
Secondly, please explain to me how museums visits, cultural experiences, and viewing the world outside of your own neighborhood is….a bad thing?
We are a global community now!
Understanding each other and getting along with each other is more important now than ever!
If we can accomplish this…maybe one day there really will be peace on Earth.
I can hear the argument now. The teacher has to create make- up work. As a 15 year teaching veteran I can firmly say this is nonsense. The teacher will give the same work that she was planning anyway for the class.
AND any teacher worth her teaching certificate knows to have a folder that says ‘make-up work’ on it so the student can get all the missing work upon return. The ‘really with it’ teacher will assign a student to even put it in there for her! Zippo extra work.
Never mind your opinion on family vacations during the school year… How do you feel about Uncle Sam telling you what you can and can not do? Does this bother anyone else but me?
I get it. These laws are in place to prevent parents from disappearing with their children for months on end. Crazy you say? It does happen. Once, while teaching 3rd grade in Houston, I had a student named Beverly (not her real name). This student was really sweet but hopelessly behind and the odds of her passing the ‘mandatory’ state test in 3rd grade (written by the same ‘they’ who make laws apparently) that year were slim. So, right after Thanksgiving her parents took her entire family and left for another country….say Finland. (No, not the real country.) They did not return until mid January. After chatting with the teachers Beverly had in past grades I learned that the family did this every single year. So, even if Beverly was the all time sharpest student in the land, no one can miss 1/4 of the school year every year and expect to pass much of anything!
So, should MY child and YOUR child be penalized because Beverly and her parents disappear each school year for 2 months? I should say not!
Vacations can enrich education!
Fuel passion for exploration!
Strengthen family bonds!
Do not be afraid to travel with the kids – and miss school to do it. Not all the time – not every semester or even every year, but if the perfect vacation needs to take place during the school year – go for it!
Wondering how to handle the school? The teacher? No worries! Read all you need to know here.
It is easy to learn while you travel. My ebooks make it easy! If you don’t see the destination you want, just ask! I’m working on new ones all the time.
Happy Travels – whenever they happen!
