Crazy laws – Texas
Texas has some crazy laws!
You might think that lawmakers are all serious folks, but not so! Apparently, they have a soft spot for state flowers because this ‘crazy’ law in Texas is was put into place when they realized the first state song didn’t mention the flowers. The law reads, “…<we> adopt the Bluebonnet song as the State Flower Song” so yes, the state of Texas has a state song AND a state flower song because I guess we are fancy that way.
Texans are a proud bunch. I’m a native Houstonian so I certainly fall into the category of a proud Texan, too. Texans love that things are BIG in Texas. Texans love food! Texans even embrace the strange pieces of the past. Why toss out the old and weird stuff when you can embrace it and laugh?? These laws are perfect examples. Enjoy!
Crazy laws – Texas that are still technically on the books
It is illegal to milk another person’s cow.
So if you really have a hankering to milk a cow, please ask first.
It is illegal to carry wire cutters in your pocket.
I presume this was to keep you from cutting Jimmy Joe Bob’s fence to let the cattle out. Just the idea of cattle rustling ruffles feathers these days and that must be why this law is still on the books. (Austin)
Don’t Mess with Texas!
For more than 30 years, Texas has used the campaign, “Don’t Mess with Texas” to educate and encourage people to keep the roads of Texas clean and NOT to litter. Texans take this really seriously -so seriously that the following had to be made a law.
It is illegal to litter from an aircraft. (Galveston)
I always thought that it was a bad idea to open the window on a plane. My source is a number of movies where people get sucked out of an airplane window that is broken after the good guy and the bad guy wrestle over control of a gun. How do you litter from a plane anyway?
It is illegal to eat garbage that belongs to someone else.
Apparently, you can eat your own garbage all you like. If you absolutely have to eat your neighbor’s garbage, you can ask permission first.
It is illegal to throw confetti in Borger, Texas.
This law was a mom’s idea. She is tired, tired, tired of cleaning up everyone’s mess! She was quoted as saying, “I am not the maid”.
Crazy laws – Texas that make you think “What is the story that led to this law?”
It is illegal to urinate on the Alamo. (San Antonio)
Um, duh. Moms everywhere are shaking their heads that this needed to be made a law. Some people were just raised in a barn.
It is illegal to emit obnoxious odors in an elevator. (Port Arthur)
Well, hallelujah. This should be a law everywhere!!
It is illegal to shoot a buffalo from the second story window of a hotel.
When shooting very large game that can run faster than you can should at least be on the third floor to have the best view? You need to be on the second floor to be safe in case you miss him and just make him mad? Why is this a law?
Crazy laws – Texas that make you think “Someone clearly didn’t think this through!”
It is illegal to purchase beer after midnight on Sunday……but it is LEGAL to purchase beer on Mondays. (Houston)
Someone had way too much beer before writing this down. Don’t lawmakers even read their laws?
It is illegal to purchase Limburger cheese on Sundays. (Houston)
Really, Limburger cheese on Sundays? How gauche. Limburger cheese is obviously a Tuesday cheese. *sigh*
It is illegal to commit a crime without giving your victim 24 hours notice.
AND it is illegal to commit a crime. Hmmmm…. Ask any police officer and they will tell you that this brilliant law is not followed enough!
There is more to Texas than the weird laws we laugh about. Learning about a destination before you visit helps make the journey more interesting – especially for kids. The more they know about a place the better!
Teachers call the information you give kids ‘background knowledge’ and it helps your young student learn more and remember more!
