“Without Art the Earth is Just Eh” is one of my favorite quotes because it is so true!! Whether you are an artsy type and like to create art or you aren’t an artsy type.. everyone can understand how art adds value to the world. The colors of an art piece that speaks to you makes you feel happy. Some art that I just don’t get at all makes me laugh!
Once I walked into a room at the Guggenheim museum and stopped dead in my tracks because I was looking at a HUGE pile of couscous (yes, the food) about the size of a king sized bed. I actually looked around to see if I was on candid camera! Then, I caught the eye of the guard nearby and he nodded as if to say, “Yes, it really is a pile of couscous and yes it is ‘art’.” Upon closer inspection I noticed it was shaped like someone had made a sand castle city in the middle. What an interesting piece. They actually cooked all the couscous in the art museum’s kitchen.
Was this art something I would want to purchase? No way! Would I say it was ‘beautiful’ or ‘pretty’ …not at all. But was it worthwhile? YES! It had me thinking, wondering, and asking all sorts of questions like…how long does a couscous art piece last before the bugs start visiting? No matter what you are talking about – communication is a good thing in our world!
Some of the most fun we’ve had in museums as a family is when we pause and try to understand what in the world the artist was trying to say. We giggle, we talk. Those are great memory making moments!
