I Love to Travel
I love to travel!
Do you love to travel, too? What is it about traveling that you love? I doubt it comes as a surprise to you that someone who blogs as The Educational Tourist loves to travel. The world is a large and wonderfully complicated place. I think that the more we explore it and share it with the kids. Learning about other cultures and seeing new things really opens your eyes. Need more convincing? Read on!
Travel Hobby – The best hobby ever!
Hobbies are so good for you! Hobbies give you an opportunity to get away from the every day grind. When things are work are too – boring, stressful, tedious, etc. and deadlines loom and things just seem to be a grind and a treadmill of nothingness, you can ‘get away’ in your mind to another happy place. For me, travel planning has always hit the spot.
Once, I had a job that was soooo dull. I just hated it and felt like my very soul was being sucked out of my being each day, but like everyone else I had to work and I needed the job. I felt so stuck. I tried focusing on the money, even figuring out how much I made per 5 min so every time 5 minutes went by I could at least say to myself, “I just earned 37 cents” or whatever. That didn’t really work for me. Perhaps had I made more than 37 cents per 5 minutes??
The next thing I tried was planning a trip and THAT was just the ticket! Then, the work was still boring and mind numbing and soul sucking, but during breaks and lunch (and slow times) I would think about what I would see on my vacation! It really, really helped me.
The very best hobby ever is the one you are super passionate about!
Travel Hobby – Keep your mind Active
Traveling is a great hobby to keep your mind active. Not only do you have something to think about that actually gives you joy but there is just so much to learn! When you visit a new place you can read up on everything from cultural differences to history and literature from that area.
Read to the kids before you go to get everyone thinking about the new destination for your family vacation.
CLICK BELOW on your destination for a ready made list of books for the kids on YOUR vacation.
You’ll engage all parts of your brain, too, when you think about travel.
You can listen to music created in your destination. Listen to it on your way to that boring job! I love travel and I love listening to music from other places in the world.
Listen to or read literature written in that country or written by someone from that country. Learn what makes the locals tick. Learning about the area adds so much to the experience.
Travel Hobby – Food!
Exploring the new area and culture through food is a great part of the fun! I like to try new recipes before we go to get the kids thinking about food from that country. Once there it is fun to try some of the local flavors. I even come back from trips with a ‘souvenir’ recipe and try it at home. Shopping for spices while you travel can be fun, too.
Are you a foodie? Explore the best restaurants around! Taste it yourself to see what all the fuss is about with the local famous dish. You never know what you’ll find. I have had the very best squid ever in Santorini and the best lentils in Morocco. I’ve also had some very strange stuff….I had to ask what these odd looking things are. Can you identify?
Travel Hobby – Make Memories
Isn’t making memories the best part of time spent together as a family? Do you have those funny family inside jokes? Make more when you travel.
Our lives are so busy these days. I remember when we had so much more free time to just be with one another. Now, the kids are buried in homework and every single free moment is spoken for. Your job can find you 24/7 thanks to texting, etc. There is so much less downtime. Even kid sports seem to take up more time. How many times do you even get to sit down and eat together during the week? We often eat in the car on the way to practice of one sort or another.
On vacation you have lots of time to enjoy one another. Time to talk, and even more importantly, time to listen. Everyone feels valued when they feel heard. Listen to each other – over breakfast, discussing that new ‘weird’ thing you saw, talk about art, talk about the weather, talk about crazy signs. Enjoy each others.
Travel Hobby – Exploring Transportation
One of the things I love most about travel in Europe is the ease of getting around. The kids love exploring different modes of transportation and I love the ease of it! You have buses and trains and ferries and bicycles and subways.
Travel Hobby – It Changes You
I love travel so much partly because it changes you. Every new experience, every new meal, every new encounter, changes you. Exploring new things creates new pathways in your mind which strengthens your mind. Alzheimers research suggests that the more pathways you have the longer you can stave off the symptoms of the horrible disease, Alzheimers.
You take a piece of everything you see with you forever. Make wonderful cultural from all over the world a part of you AND take the kids! The world shrinks every day because we can get there faster now and talk to each other and text 24/7. The world is small. Help your kids find their spot in it by giving them a foundation full of cultural experiences.
Travel Hobby – Experience Beauty in All Forms
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder and travel lets you see how others in the world view beauty. You can see it in different types of clothing and different forms of art.
I love art but some of the most fun we have in seeing the differences in beauty is in shoes. Whether you are looking at shoes on the feet of the locals or looking in the windows of shoe shops I’m always amazed at the differences in what we consider a beautiful shoe at home vs what the locals consider a beautiful shoe. I’ve brought a few back as souvenirs, too!
Travel Hobby – Become a Better Person
Every experience you have adds a little bit to your ‘self’ – new foods, new art, new music, new faces, and new friends. Exploring the culture adds to your makeup and lets you understand the global community that shrinks every day. Knowing and understanding each other helps us create a truly global community.
Break down the stereotypes around the world. Learn the truth by seeing it for yourself. Represent your country by showing others the world over what people from your country are like. Take the chance to represent your home part of the world to others.
Traveling teaches you so much. Enjoy the travels and all that it means to you and your family.
